March 2023 Luncheon Meeting

March 9 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm CST

$15.00 – $20.00

Our March luncheon speaker will be Bruce Litzsinger, Assistant Director of Engineering and Planning at the St. Louis Metropolitan Sewer District.   He’ll provide us with a technical update of Project Clear, MSD’s massive stormwater control project.   Undertaken in 2012 in agreement with the U.S. EPA, MSD’s Project Clear is a $6 billion,  28-year effort by MSD to improve water quality and resolve issues caused by the city’s century-old combined sewer system.

Under this initiative, MSD is building eight underground tunnels and storage facilities to control sewer overflows and improve the overall system.  Using a specialized Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), MSD’s construction partners are digging tunnels into the limestone rock layer 150-250 feet beneath the St. Louis area.   Working up to 230 feet below the surface, the TBM bores the tunnel out of sight and sound of the public. On smaller projects, contractors will use controlled blasting to excavate the tunnel. During either type of construction, local residents and businesses will experience little if any disturbance to their daily routine. Once complete, the tunnels will be lined with sturdy material to keep groundwater out and wastewater in.

Projects currently underway include the Deer Creek Sanitary Tunnel, Jefferson Barracks Tunnel, and Maline Creek Storage Facility.

Please join us for this fascinating presentation.   Box lunches will be served.   If you require special assistance or a vegetarian meal, please contact Jackie@RREnvPartners.com
