About Us
Our Purpose
The Gateway Society of Hazardous Materials Managers (GSHMM) was established in 1990 to provide a forum in the Saint Louis bi-state region for environmental, health, and safety regulations governing hazardous materials and wastes; and to establish a network of multi-disciplined professionals in the environmental, health, and safety (EHS) fields.
GSHMM provides opportunities for EHS professionals to advance in their respective fields, while developing and maintaining knowledge of other regulatory issues that may affect them; and to guide EHS professionals in the pursuit of the nationally recognized Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) credential.
Our society is also committed to providing mentorship, regulatory information and guidance to businesses and professionals in the St. Louis area.
GSHMM was founded in 1990 as an affiliate of the 8,000-member Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers. In 1993, the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (ACHMM) officially recognized this affiliation. In 2009, ACHMM changed its name to the Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP).
Members meet monthly to hear experts discuss topics of current interest. In the past, we have had professionals from St. Louis City HazMat Response, MDNR, IEPA, USEPA, OSHA, consultants, and attorneys speak on key topics in the areas of EHS, environmental regulatory compliance and policy, environmental science and technology, hazardous materials handling, emergency response, and site remediation.
GSHMM also supports a 3-day review course (Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management) offered through Saint Louis University to help aspirants qualify for the CHMM certification exam. To reach out to the business community, the GSHMM conducts an annual seminar on regulatory issues, with particular emphasis on the issues that may impact small businesses.
Besides the monthly meetings and conferences, members have opportunities to become involved with the local chapter through serving on standing or special committees, on the Board of Directors, or as a Chapter Officer.
We elect officers from our membership for one-year terms. These officers must be accredited CHMMs to serve in the positions of President, President-Elect, Treasurer, or Secretary. By the election process, we ensure that our officers serve the Gateway community, and are responsive to our needs.
